Things Fall Apart Is A Catastrophe Novel - Free Essay Example

Things fall apart is a catastrophe novel composed by Chinua Achebe. Okonkwo, who is the hero of the novel and a standout amongst the most influential men in the Ibo clan regularly falls back on viciousness to make his focuses comprehended. Down in his heart, Okonkwo is certifiably not a pitiless man, however his life is commanded by his interior clash, the dread of disappointment and of shortcoming. He despised his dad, Unoka, on the grounds that he was a languid account holder. Okonkwo made it a point in his life to separate himself from his dad by being outstanding and affluent and additionally turning into an incredible warrior in the innate clashes of Umuofia and the encompassing towns. His dread leads him to submit merciless activities that are awful for him and the faction, for models, his wild resentment has made his family and the tribe fear him. Okonkwos outer clash will be his family and religion which is one reason that prompted the passing of Okonkwo toward the end. Okonkwos most conspicuous interior clash, the dread of disappointment and shortcoming, demolished his life and has made him a remorseless man. His inward clash gives him only the apprehensions of his family and tribe have towards him. His contention is significantly affected by his dad, yet Okonkwo takes his dread to the extraordinary. Okonkwos dad was an extremely apathetic and joyful man. He had a notoriety of being poor and his better half and youngsters had scarcely enough to eat they swore never to loan him any more cash since he never paid back (Achebe, pg. 61). In Umuofia, a dad should encourage the youngsters good and bad, and for this situation, the exercises were not educated, but rather self-learned. Okonkwo needed to depend alone translations of what characterized a decent man and to him, that was somebody that was the correct inverse of his dad. Because of his own self-educated ends, Okonkwo feels that anything taking after his dad or anything that his dad appreciated was frail and pointless. In light of his dread to be viewed as frail, Okonkwo even strikes down Ikemefuna who lives with him for a long time calls him father: as the blade descended. Okonkwo turned away. He heard the blow. He heard Ikemefuna cry My dad, they have executed me! Okonkwo draws his cleaver and chops him down. He wouldnt like to be however frail (P. 61). Indeed, even the act wanton and merciless, his blame of killing Ikemefuna has caused him for not ready to rest and eats for quite a long time. This demonstrates he will wreck everything that makes him look feeble regardless. Okonkwos wild outrage is his another unmistakable blemish that repels him from genuine enormity. In spite of the fact that his outrage has served him well in his life, eventually, it demolishes his lifestyle. Okonkwo is unpleasant on his child, for instance, when Nwoye catches that Ikemefuna was to be reclaimed to his town, burst into tears Okonkwo beat him heavily(P57). Okonkwo attempts to ingrain his own perspectives on the most proficient method to live as a man to his child, and to Okonkwo, crying is womanly, thus Nwoye is rebuffed for it. Okonkwos failure to control his annoyance, in the end, pushes his child far from him as opposed to showing him what is correct and what isnt right. It makes Nwoye need to join what Okonkwo needs to annihilate. Okonkwo spies the District Commissioner and as he trembles with loathing, unfit to absolute a word instantly Okonkwo drew his blade. The flag-bearer squatted to stay away from the blow. It was futile. Okonkwos cleaver dropped twice and the mans head lay close to his formally dressed body. (P.204) Okonkwos detest and outrage in this circumstance, in the end, drives him to his demise. In spite of the fact that his detest and outrage is supported here, unmistakably he cant control himself, and excessive annoyance accomplishes more mischief than anything. Achebe attempts to demonstrate the perusers that detest and outrage is an exceptionally dangerous approach to carry on with your life. In the event that the general population around sense the possibility of progress, they will conflict with their ruler with expectations of progress. Further castration of Okonkwo and every one of the men of Umuofia will happen later in the account, when the British Christians arrive, and start to endeavor to take all specialist and significance from the clans. A lifestyle that, while not flawless, has existed for a considerable length of time and has seen the clan through great occasions and terrible, is in risk of being pulverized by a culture that has no utilization for such natives. Truth be told, it appears to be very evident that the Igbos all in all uncover themselves more tolerant of different societies than the Europeans, who just observe the Igbos as uncouth (Rhoads 63). The British faith in their prevalence, and the Igbo conviction that there is space for everybody rapidly clashes as British may surpasses everything. The establishment of Christian missions and bureaucratic workplaces, many staffed by locals who have immediately been absorbed, is at first seen with gentle mocking. It isnt long anyway before the scorn swings to stress, and outrage. The local delivery people, the kotma, turn into an image of loathe inside the towns; their slag dim shorts acquire them the moniker Ashy-Buttocks, a name they dislike, the court couriers disliked to be called Ashy-Buttocks, and they beat the men (Achebe 128). This maltreatment, stored on the villagers by their very own kin, starts to cause strain and splits inside the life of the clans. The British, in their presumption, cant comprehend the obstruction of the clans and just break down harder, coming full circle in the previously mentioned catch of six of the town men, and their consequent mortification and emancipating. This scene caused the last snap of indignation that set Okonkwo upon the tragic errand person with his blade pursued by his very own suicide. Notwithstanding knowing about these occasions, the British authority, the area official, cant bring himself to really think about the emotions that prompted this episode. It is viewed as just a single more case of the savage methods for the crude culture. The conduct of Britain amid the pioneer time frame is a notable and much harped on point however at the time the novel was composed, much was all the while turning out, and huge numbers of the oppressed societies had just barely started to push back, asking for, requesting, and battling for their freedom. Achebes tale was a crisp interpretation of the Nigerian attitude, composed by an offspring of that country, who felt that his obligation as an author in another country was demonstrating his kin the respect that they lost amid the frontier time frame (Rhoads 61). His choice to compose the novel in English, which was considered fairly dubious, was made as a result of the progressions that had been made to the Nigerian dialect by the colonials: There is an issue with the Igbo dialect. It experiences an intense legacy which it got toward the start of this century from the Anglican mission. They conveyed an evangelist by the name of Dennis. Archdeacon Dennis. He was a researcher. He had this thought the Igbo dialect which had a lot of various vernacular sought to some way or another fabricate a uniform lingo that would be utilized in writing to stay away from all these distinctive tongues. Since the evangelists were incredible, what they needed to do they did. This turned into the law. In any case, the standard rendition cant sing. Theres nothing you can do with it to influence it to sing. Its overwhelming. Its wooden. It doesnt go anyplace. (Brooks) In purpose of reality, Achebes inclination about the manner in which the Igbo dialect was changed could possibly be connected to the overall changes that were made to Igbo life in general. One gets the inclination that the tune of Igbo life was removed, and it would be up to scholars like Achebe to restore that tune to his kin. In Things Fall Apart, and resulting books, Chinua Achebe toiled to bring national pride and a feeling of self back to his kin. While short, unforgiving, and eventually exceptionally dismal, the narrative of Okonkwo was an essential one to tell, and Achebe accomplished his motivation with momentous keenness and understanding. He illustrates, for European and American perusers, and in addition his very own kin, that under the skin most societies work in fundamentally the same as routes in spite of the distinctions in area and convictions. The battle to adjust manly and female, the drive to collect riches and accommodate family, the capacity to make wonderful gems and music, is natural for all societies, regardless of whether we can remember it or not. Be that as it may, it is the simple capacity to perceive these similitudes among the distinctions that will enable us to meet up as a working human culture. Okonkwos outside clash will be his family and religion which is one reason that prompted the demise of Okonkwo toward the end. The tribes of the Igbo society venerated their divine beings, which made of stones and woods, uniquely in contrast to different religions. They had an agent for every one of their goddess, for example, the Oracle of the Hills. The fundamental god that they loved was Chukwu, who was accepted had made paradise and Earth. His disdain and the mortification he gets from the Christian make him murder the errand person of District Commissioner. Okonkwo believes that the Christians have destroyed their groups in light of the fact that the tribes found another and precise instructing, they started to question their own religion and the Igbo society was never again acted like one. The demise of Okonkwo toward the end was unusual on the grounds that all through the novel, Chinua Achebe depicted him as a solid warrior who dreamed of nothing other than disappointment and shortcoming. At the point when Okonkwo submitted suicide, he additionally dedicated the main thing he dreaded, and that was a shortcoming. Taking everything into account, Okonkwos most unmistakable interior clash, the dread of disappointment and shortcoming, annihilated his life and has made him a savage man. His wild annoyance is his another noticeable defect that wards off him from genuine enormity. Toward the end, when Okonkwo submitted suicide, he likewise dedicated the main thing he dreaded, and that was a shortcoming. References Achebe, Chinua. Things Fall Apart. The First Chapter of computer Languages Essay Example For Students

The First Chapter of computer Languages Essay The Tortuous Path of Early Programming. In the perpetual darkness more than two miles below the surface of the North Atlantic, a submersible sled slowly traced the alpine contours of the ocean bottom in the summer of 1985. Named the Argo after the ship in which the legendary Greek Hero Jason sought the Golden Fleece, the 16-foot-long craft resembled a section of scaffolding flung on its side and stuffed with equipment, Powerful lights, sonar, Video cameras. Far above, arrayed in front of a video screen in the control room of the U.S. Navy research vessel Knorr, Members of a joint French-American scientific expedition intently watched the images transmitted by the submersible as it was towed above a desolate landscape of canyons and mud slides. After 16 days of patient search, A scattering of metallic debris appeared on the screen, followed by the unmistakable outline of a ships boiler. A jubilant cry arose from the scientists. The ocean liner Titanic sunk 73 years earlier with more than 1,500 of its 2,200 passengers on board had finally been found. The quest for the remains of the Titanic in the crushing depths of the sea was a remarkable application of computer technology, as exotic in its means as in its venue. Not least of the keys to the successful outcome was the agility of modern computer programming. Argoss ensemble of sonar, lights and cameras was orchestrated by an array of computers that each programmed in a different computer language. The computer on the unmanned Argo itself was programmed in FORTH, a concise but versatile language originally designed to regulate movement of telescopes and also used to control devices and processes ranging from heart monitors to special-effects video cameras. The computer on the Knorr was programmed in C, a powerful but rather cryptic language capable of precisely specifying computer operations. The telemetry System at either end of the finger thick Co-ax cable connecting the vessels, which in effect enabled their computers to talk to each other, was programmed in a third, rudimentary tongue known as assembly language. Programming languages are the carefully and Ingeniously conceived sequences of words, letters, numerals and abbreviated mnemonics used by people to communicate with their computers. Without them, computers and their allied equipment would be useless hardware. Its own grammar and syntax regulate each language. A programming language that approximates human language and can generate more than one instruction with a single statement is deemed to be high-level. But computer languages tend to be much more sober and precise than human languages. They do not indulge in multiple meanings, inflections or twists of iron. Like computers themselves, computer languages have no sense of humour. Today there are several hundred such languages, considerably more than a thousand if their variations, called Dialects, are counted. They enable their users to achieve a multitude of purposes, from solving complex mathematical problems and manipulating (or crunching) business statistics to creating musical scores and computer graphics. No existing Language is perfect for every situation. One or more of three factors usually determines the choice among them: The language is convenient to the programmer; it is useable on the available computer; it is well suited to the problem at hand. The multiple tongues employed on the Titanic expedition are a case in point. For the computers aboard the surface ship Knorr, C was the preferred language because it provided more direct control of the computerised hardware. FORTH was the only high-level language that could be used on the submersible Argos computer. And the precise timing required timing required of the signals passed by cable between th e two vessels was best accomplishedby rigid assembly language. As varied languages have become the all build on a common base. At their most fundamental level, Computers respond to only a single language, The high and low of electric voltages representing the ones and zeros of binary code. Depending on how these signals are fed into a computers memory. Another might be a piece of data yet to be processed. Yet another collection of binary digits, or bits, might command the machine to perform a certain action, such as adding to numbers. The circuitry of each type of computer is designed to respond to a specific and finite set of these binary encoded machines, which may be combined and recombined to enable the machine to perform a vast range of tasks. Though straightforward enough this so-called machine is a forbidding, alien language to human beings. A computer program of any size, in its machine-code form, consists of thousands or even millions of ones and zeros, strung together like beads on a seemingly interminable string. A mistake in even one of these digits can make the difference between a programs success and failure. Less than half a century ago, machine code was the only means of communicating with computers. Since then, generations of language designers have harnessed the power of the computer to make it serve as its own translator. Now, when a programmer uses the command PRINT Hello or the statement LET A = B * (C D) in a program, a translating program is called into action, converting those commands into the ones and zeros that the machine can understand. The methods used to program the worlds first general-purpose computers were as cumbersome and primitive as the machines they served. The historic Mark 1, assembled at Harvard University during World War 2, was a five-ton conglomeration of relays, shafts, gears and dials, 51 feet long. It received its instructions for solving problems from the spools of punched paper tape that were prepared and fed into a computer by small corps if technicians. A more advanced machine, ENIAC (for Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer), was completed i n 1945 at the University of Pennsylvanias Moore School of Electrical Engineering. Unlike the Mark 1, which was electromechanical, ENIAC was fully electronic. But it was still devilishly difficult to program. Its primary developers, Physicist John W. Mauchly and engineer J. Presper Eckert, had responded to the urgencies of wartime by concentrating on ENIACs hardware. Programming took a back seat. ENIAC was not even equipped to receive instructions on paper tape. To prepare it for operation, ma team of technicians had to set thousands of switches by hand and insert hundreds of cables into plug boards until the front of the computer resembled a bowl of spaghetti. Not surprisingly, ENIACs users tried to squeeze the last drop of information out of any given configuration before they undertook to change it. These early experiences made it all too plain that a better means of communicating with the machine with the machine was needed if computers were to approach their potential. And even as ENIAC hummed through its first electronic calculations, some forward-looking work on a higher level programming was being done elsewhere. In at least one case, however, many years would pass before the results came to light. Konrad Zuses world was crashing down around him early in 1945 as the allied military noose tightened on Berlin, his home city. The young German engineer had been working since before the war on a series of relatively small, general-purpose computers, using the living room of his parents apartment as his laboratory. Zuses efforts were a notable example of parallel yet independent developments in science; he had no idea of the similar progress being made in other nations, and his own government had shown little interest in his computer work. Shortly before the fall of Berlin, Zuse loaded his only surviving computer, dubbed the Z4, onto a wagon and fled with a convoy of other refugees to a small town in the Bavarian Alps. Arizona Concrete EssayShort Codes partner program was essentially a primitive interpreter, a language translator that converts the high-level statements in which a program is written into simpler instructions for immediate execution. As programming languages evolved, interpreters would become one of the two basic categories of language translators. New advances in languages soon overtook Short Code, but its central idea endured. Far from being simply glorified adding machines, computers are consummate manipulators of symbols, whether those symbols represent numbers, letters, colours, or even musical notes. A computer has no difficulty taking the code numerals 07 and performing the sequence of steps that leads it to add two numbers, as long as it has been programmed to recognise 07 as the symbol for addition. In the same manner, it can take a complete statement, such as IF N * 100 THEN PRINT N/47, and translate it into the basic machine instructions that will enable the hardware to carry out the desired task. This purposeful manipulation of symbols is the fundamental principle behind all programming languages. Although short code was never a commercial success, the language made a deep impression on Grace Hopper. Short code was the first step toward something which gave a programmer the power to write a program in a language that bore no resemblance whatsoever to the original machine code, she said. But before the promise of Short code could be realised, much more had to be done. The pace of progress in computer languages was tightly bound to advances in computer hardware, and during the late 1940s there were few such advances. Most of them were influenced by Mauchly and Eckerts early work and could in fact trace their origins to a specific event: a series of lectures held at the Moore School in the summer of 1946.There, Mauchly and Eckert discussed the successor to ENIAC they were planning. Dubbed the Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer, or EDVAC, it would dramatically reduce the labour involved in changing from one program to another by storing its programs and date electronically in an expanded internal memory. One participant in that summer was Maurice V. Wilkes, then head of the Mathematical Laboratory at Cambridge University. Inspired by the lectures, Wilkes returned to England and set about designing a machine based on the EDVAC concept, construction began in 1947. Named the electronic storage Automatic Calculator, or EDSAC, it became operational in 1949, well before Mauchly and Eckerts firm produced its first commercial computer. Like many early computers, EDSAC was a finicky performer. One programmer recalled that even the sound of a airplane flying overhead could bring it to a halt. Whatever EDSAC was shut down for any reason, a set of initial orders had to be loaded into the machine to enable it to accept programs again. This process made a whiring sound, which was a signal for everyone who wanted to use the computer to come running, Programs in hand. Those fortunate enough to have offices nearest the computerusually ended up in the front of the queue. The others might have to wait a long time. At first, EDSAC could perform 18 basic operations (modern computers usually have a capability of 200), each of them triggered by a particualar sequence of ones and zeros. Early on, EDSACs designers decided not to force its programmers to use this machine code in their programs. instead they set up a system of mnemonics in which each machine instruction was represented by a single capital letter. Thus S meant Subtra ct, I meant Read the next row of holes T meant Transfer information to storage and Z meant Stop the machine. When a programmer typed a mnemonic on a specially adapted keyboard, the corresponding binary instruction was punched into a papertape, which could then be fes to the machine. Even more valuable than the mnemonics devised for EDSAC was the library of subroutines set up for the machine. Subroutines were already a familiar concept in computing: Grace Hopper and her group had used the on the Harvard Mark 1. But they continued to pose their own peculiar problems. Subroutines are independant sections of the computer program that are used over and over and are called for by the main program when needed.Early programmers often kept notebooks containing the comman used subroutines so that they did not have to start from scratch when one was needed. The problem was that the addresses that designated where each of a subroutines instructions and varibles were to reside in memory changed according to where the subroutine occured in the program. Maurice Wilked called the EDSAC scheme of mnemonics and subroutines an assembly system, Commanly known as Assembly. Assembly code reamsins in use today because of its close relation to the machine, an assembly language is machine-specific, designed to correspond to the set of machine-code instructions wired into a particular computers CPU. Thus, assembly lanuage is a favourite of programmers who want to compress their programs into the smallest possible space in memory and have them run as fast and efficiently as possible. These attributes made it ideal for programming the telemetry system used by the Titanics finders. Anyone writing in assembly language has to be intimately familiar with how a computer does things, To know, for example, the many steps required simply to add 2 numbers. Assembly written for one computer would be totally gibberish to another computer. The language was a creation of a brilliant english mathematician Alan M. Turing. By 1948, Turing was in charge of programming he prototype of a real computer called Mark 1, the machine that was being constructed at the University of Manchester. (It was not related to the Mark 1 of Harvard). The manchester Mark 1used combinations of five binary digits to represent the machines different instructions, with each instruction requiring four such combinations, or 20 bits. Intending to make the Mark 1 easier to program , Turing installed a system in which a mnemonic symbol was substituted for each of the 32 combinations of Zeros and Ones possible with a five-bit code. The symbols Turing assigned to the combinations were the letters, numerals an d punctuation mark of a standard teleprinter keyboard. For Example, a slash (/), or stroke to the British, stood for 00000, or zero, an R stood for 01010, and so up to a , representing 11111. That is the end of part one of the four part series. William Faulkner and His Rose for Emily

William Faulkner is considered to be one of the most prolific writers and among the most influential ones for that matter in the last century in American Literature. His numerous contributions to the literary field were so immense and, as a result, he became a Nobel Laureate and won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949.Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on William Faulkner and His Rose for Emily specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More His oeuvres range from novels to short stories and poems, and he has created a permanent spot in the history of American literature. A Rose for Emily is regarded as one of the most outstanding and the most controversial pieces of work. This story is full of captivating details which can make a short story really interesting for the reader and for the critics. On the one hand, the vast majority of critics admit that it is not a true style that was preferred by William Faulkner. On t he other hand, it is always interesting to develop various experiments and intrigue the audience with extremely captivating ideas. In fact, William Faulkner made a successful attempt to impress the reader: his A Rose for Emily is a unique collection of ideas and themes which are always interesting to read and evaluate. In spite of the fact that a number of negative opinions were developed around the story, even negative criticism attracted people’s attention and prove how mature the writer could be in the chosen style. Some critics defined A Rose for Emily as a kind of exploitative story not inherent to Faulkner, still, they talked about it and made the author recognizable. People said that even really talented writers could become famous and gain desirable respect and recognition only after their deaths. William Faulkner proved that popularity had a variety of sides, and he chose the one that made his famous during his life, and immortal after his death. A Rose for Emily is the story that is characterized by numerous critical opinions: readers found the story interesting, unusual, and educative; and critics tried to admit as many negative or weak points as possible and prove that the chosen style, relations between the characters, and even frequent use of flashbacks were not winning enough to introduce the most amazing work ever. William Faulkner usually chose some unpredictable development of the events in order to impress the reader and in order to make critics notice his work. Some critics admit that this story was full of â€Å"history’s unwillingness to advance, evolve, or progress† (Aboul-Ela 18). During his life, Faulkner was able to get a number of various opinions and attitudes to his work, still, he was always confident of his abilities and writing style. In general, the criticism that was developed during the time when the author was alive had more negative than positive nature, and it was hard to recognize a true interpretatio n of a story and unclear narration offered. So that â€Å"the critical cannon of A Rose for Emily has become as bloated as the character herself† (Farnoli, Golay, and Hamblin 243).Advertising Looking for critical writing on american literature? Much attention was paid to the relations between Emily and her father which lead to the tragic end of the relations with Homer. It is always interesting to define who should be blamed for a human death, women’s tears, and pain that may be spread over many people around. In fact, with the help of a critical overview, it was possible for the reader to comprehend a true genre of the shot story, and it was not a horror story but an educative lesson that proved ho blind people with their assumptions could be. In spite of the fact that Faulkner was known during his life and a number of his works had been already recognized, not all readers were able to accept his new decision to introduce horrors. And some reader accepted A Rose for Emily not as â€Å"a ghost story at all but rather a story of a woman with a domineering father who grows old and dies in the small†¦ town† (Marius and Anderson 5). In my opinion, this particular story by William Faulkner is characterized by the opinions which could be hardly differentiated before and after his death. There are many supporters and opponents of his talent as they were during his life. It is not very difficult to define some powerful aspects of the story like an amazing flashback at the end of the story when Homer was discovered on Emily’s bed. This idea proved that the power of a woman is worth attention and recognition. Even now the relations between women and men are not similar to each other, and each story may have its own end either dramatic or happy. This is why there are so many reasons to respect the achievements of the author and his ideas which are expressed through the story. A Rose for Emily seemed to be an immortal calling by Faulkner with the help of which he reminds the readers that each type of relations without considering whether it is developed at early times (like it was with Emily’s father) or when a person grows up (the relations with Homer) has its own consequences and may influence a lot of aspects which are so crucial for a human life. The work was first published in 1930 in a copy of Forum, a magazine (Reuben). It was easily one of those short stories that featured most in many collections of shor t stories. It was a work that was not easy to interpret. This is why so many possible and plausible interpretations appeared within a short period of time. The story was popular at the time of its publication. â€Å"A Rose for Emily is by far the best-known, most reprinted, most widely read, and most discussed short story† (Towner and Carothers 63).Advertising We will write a custom critical writing sample on William Faulkner and His Rose for Emily specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In general, the story A Rose for Emily introduced by William Faulkner at the beginning of the 20th century is a perfect lesson for people who live in modern world. Very often people are blind because of the opportunities offered and cannot define their own weaknesses. On the one hand, it is a terrible truth that has to be admitted and cannot be understood. And on the other hand, A Rose for Emily becomes more amazing and educative story that fulfi ls this life and helps to discover the essence of the life. Works Cited Aboul-Ela, Hosam. Compare and Contrast Essay Writing

Compare and Contrast Essay Writing Here is a short information about 2 possible ways to write a compare and contrast essay. A comparison essay is an essay in which you either compare something or contrast something. To write a comparison essay that is easy to follow, first, decide what the similarities or differences are by writing lists on scrap paper. Which are more significant, the similarities or the differences? Plan to discuss the less significant first, followed by the more significant. It is much easier to discuss ONLY the similarities or ONLY the differences, but you can also do both. Experience a lack of time or inspiration?  Ask our writers for help  and you will get an  essay written to all your requirements. Then for organizing your comparison essay, choose one of the plans described below whichever best fits your list. Plan A: Use Plan A if you have many small similarities and/or differences. After your introduction, say everything you want to say about the first work or character, and then go on in the second half of the essay to say everything about the second work or character, comparing or contrasting each item in the second with the same item in the first. In this format, all the comparing or contrasting, except for the statement of your main point, which you may want to put in the beginning, goes on in the SECOND HALF of the piece. Plan B: Use Plan B if you have only a few, larger similarities or differences. After your introduction, in the next paragraph discuss one similarity or difference in BOTH works or characters, and then move on to the next paragraph to the second similarity or difference in both, then the third, and so forth, until youre done. If you are doing both similarities and differences, juggle them on scrap paper so that in each part you put the less important first (X and Y are both alike in their social positions . . .), followed by the more important (but X is much more aware of the dangers of his position than is Y). In this format, the comparing or contrasting goes on in EACH of the middle parts. Now, when you know the  possible ways of comparing and contrasting, lets check out our list of compare and contrast essay topics: 30 TOP Compare and Contrast Essay Topics Need an essay?   offers all essay types on different topics. Group Ariel Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Group Ariel - Essay Example The Group Ariel Company is recycling old equipment situated in Mexico. The management will need to apply the pesos to compute the company’s cash flows to ensure that they comprehend the manner in which the intended project will affect their finances. Additional for easy computation, the pesos should be converted into the Euros. This study analysed the NPV of the Ariel Mexico by deducting the value of manual machine from the value of the new machine (LAAN, & TEUNTER, 2000). Then the incremental cash flow will be represented as positive figures since the reduced value is equivalent to the cash flow. The next step was the deduction of the depreciation costs from the incremental sum costs. It is imperative to note that the fist initial three years of depreciation involved depreciation from the new machine and the remainder listed depreciation of the old machine. A deduction of 35% tax was done from the cash flow, and then the depreciation was added in order to signify the tax shie ld. For the company to calculate the project’s NPV in Euros, there is need to apply the future spot exchange rates. This can be done by dividing the peso NPV by the present spot exchange rate. Since the cash flows are discounted differently from 2008 up to 2011, then the rate of 8% of 2011 can be used to discount since it forms an average of the fours year period. It is imperative to note that computation of the present values of projects such as the Ariel Mexico can take two different ways which consider the variation of rate and risk attributed to the foreign currency. The significance of computing the NPV is to analyze the project managers or investors foresee great variations in the currency. In essence, the Group Ariel should discount the cash flows by using the foreign cost capital if the value of capital is valued in a rational manner (GOLLIER,

Physical Structure of a Neuron (Neuron-to-Neuron Communication) Essay

Physical Structure of a Neuron (Neuron-to-Neuron Communication) - Essay Example Examples of the ten different body systems are the circulatory system, the digestive system, the integumentary (skin), the skeletal, the muscular, the digestive, respiratory, the reproductive, the endocrine and the nervous system. All these systems work together in harmony that makes the human body a complex whole. Vitamins, nutrients and minerals are necessary for all the systems to work perfectly to attain and maintain good health. Regular exercise, proper diet and a healthy lifestyle all contribute and work together to make these systems function properly. Perhaps one of the most complex body system is the nervous system. This is the set of body system that is composed of very highly-specialized cells involved with the receiving and its transmission of information from both internal and external stimuli. In other words, this system is responsible for the receipt and relay of various communications within the human body. It is a complex system composed of the brain, the spinal colu mn and the nerves. The nervous system also includes the special sense organs of the eyes, the ears, nose, taste buds and skin. In effect, the nervous system is the control system of the human body. It is a sort of a command center made up of the central nervous system (brain and spinal column) and the peripheral nervous system (the spinal nerves and the twelve cranial nerves). ... It is also known by other terms like biopsychology, behavioural neuroscience and physiological psychology but the ultimate aim is the same, which is to better understand how a human nervous system and its components explain our behaviours as well as various ailments. In this regard it is very important to study and understand how biological processes affect not only behaviours and emotions but the entire cognitive process as well. For this purpose, it is crucial to explore how a person's actions are greatly influenced by the brain, neurotransmitters and the nervous system. It is therefore necessary to study the complex inter-relationship between anatomy and physiology in the complex human process of biological growth and development. This very fascinating field of study has already yielded some useful insights into how the nervous system affects and influences the entire body and indeed the whole person through a discovery of the role of chemical transmission by neurotransmitters wit hin this system in relay of information from various stimuli (Wickens, 2005, p. 11). It is in this connection that this paper is discussing the basic unit of the nervous system which is the neuron and how the neurons in turn transmit crucial information between them. An understanding of a neuron's physical structure is a necessary adjunct to the process of understanding in the entire chemical transmission process. An example of a neurotransmitter is dopamine; too little of it causes Parkinson's and Alzheimer's but too much of it is associated with psychological disorders like dyslexia and schizophrenia. Physical Structure of a Neuron – the neuron is a single cell which is the basic unit or building block of the entire nervous system.

Paper and Dumas Book Essay Example for Free

Paper and Dumas Book Essay What does Dumas’ decision to take an American name suggest about her feelings toward her adopted country? How does her dual identity enable her to see how Americans really feel about Iran? Dumas’ husband, Franà §ois, experiences life as an American immigrant much differently than does Dumas. What do you think accounts for Americans’ biases in their attitudes toward immigrants from different countries? To what extent are these biases grounded in stereotypes about the immigrants’ native countries? Evaluation: You will be graded on: Organization- Does the paper have an introduction, body, and conclusion? Does the paper have a central argument (thesis) that appears in the introduction and conclusion? Grammar, punctuation, and style- For example, does the writer use the past tense consistently? See â€Å"additional considerations† below. Use of the text- Does the paper successfully incorporate specific examples from the book? Do the examples support the paper’s thesis? Since this is still a relatively short paper, avoid long block quotes. Be succinct. In addition, avoid long summaries of the book. Your paper should be built around examples that support your thesis. You must, however, cite the books to support your claims. In each instance that you draw specific information from the book, you should insert the page number from which the idea or quote originated at the end of the sentence. Plagiarism: See description on syllabus Format: All papers should be double spaced and written in Times New Roman 12 Late Papers: Papers are due in class on the given due date. Computer related problems are not an excuse. Be prepared for a hard drive/ printer disaster. Back up your work often. Papers turned in after class on the due date (unexcused) will be docked 5 points (out of 100). Papers will be docked 3 points for every day they are late with the weekend counting as 1 day. Additional considerations: 1. Use the past tense consistently when discussing historical events. 2. Do not use first or second person in your paper. In other words, don’t use the pronouns: I, me, my, you, your, our, ours, us, etc. So, instead of: â€Å"I think Dumas considered herself to be†¦.† Just write, â€Å"Dumas considered herself to be†¦.† 3. Proof-read carefully. Even if your paper has no misspellings, that does not satisfy your need to proofread. Spell checker will occasionally correct your spelling, but insert a different word than you intended. 4. Do not use contractions. (didn’t should be did not, etc). 5. Your paper should adopt a more formal, authoritative tone. Do not use slang, clichà ©s, or profanity. 6. Use active, not passive voice. 7. Staple the paper 8. Do not use outside sources except lectures from this course (internet, other books etc.).

Human Nature in The Prince by Machiavelli and Utopia by Thomas More :: Papers More Machiavelli Prince Utopia Essays

Human Nature in The Prince by Machiavelli and Utopia by Thomas More It is difficult to determine Niccolo Machiavelli?s and Thomas More?s view on human?s nature. Each took a different approach to the topic. Through Utopia, Thomas More attempted to change man?s thinking by creating an ideological society. Niccolo Machiavelli, through The Prince, attempted to teach man how to deal with human nature. With this in mind, Machiavelli?s concept is much more realistic than More?s; therefore Machiavelli better represents human nature. Machiavelli?s view of human nature in The Prince, presents, on the surface, a view of governing a state drastically different for his time. Machaivelli believed that the ruling Prince should be the sole authority determining every aspect of the state and put into effect a policy which would serve his best interests. With this, Machiavelli uses the prince as man, and the state as the man?s life. These interests were gaining, maintaining, and expanding his political power. Though in some cases Machiavelli may seem harsh and immoral , one must remember that his views were derived from concern of Italy?s unstable political condition in the 1500s. Machiavelli seems to be teaching the common man how to live his life so that their life is good and prosperous. Machiavelli generally distrusted citizens, stating that since men are a sorry lot and will not keep their promises to you, you likewise need not keep yours to them? (Machiavelli 651). Furthermore, ? a prince never lacks legitimate reasons to break his promises? when, ?such an observance of faith would be to his disadvantage; and when the reasons which made him promise are removed? (651). Machiavelli did not feel that a Prince should mistreat the citizens. This suggestion once again to serve the Prince?s best interests. If a Prince can not be both feared and loved, Machiavelli suggests, it would be better for him to be feared by the citizens within his own dogma. He makes the generalization that men are, ungrateful, fickle, simulators and deceivers, avoiders o f danger, greedy for gain; and while you work for their good they are yours? (649). He characterizes men as being self-centered and not willing to act in the best interest of the state,? and when it (danger) comes nearer to you they turn away? (649). Machiavelli reinforces the Prince?s need to be feared by stating: men are less hesitant about harming someone who makes himself loved than one who makes himself feared?

Coffee Shop Essay

The global spread of coffee growing and drinking all started with a curious goat and that’s what legends say. 9th century Ethiopian goat herder Kaldi drank a concoction made from the beans after seeing his energetic goats eat them. The Sufi monks of Yemen in the 15th century were said to drink it as well. During the 17th century when coffee was introduced to Europe, the popularity of cafes followed the same pattern as most coffee houses around the world. It quickly became a venue for people to congregate, exchange views, write poems, plays, and political testaments, conduct business transactions, participate in cultural exchange and often relax with a good book. The popularity of coffee shop had served as a mailing address, because many people were regulars. When you want to go to exchange news, share ideas and get advice, you go to a coffee shop. It has been that way for quite some time. Coffee shops had been places of learning; of making business deals; scientific, literary, political, philosophical, and economic discussions; and even the typical gossip. At the beginning of the nineteenth century nearly all coffee exported on the world market was produced by European colonies. Two-thirds came from French colonies. But despite the fact that the following century would witness what Eric Hobsbawm called â€Å"The Age of Empire† and Lance Davis termed â€Å"high imperialism†, colonialism would cease being important in coffee production. (Though colonies certainly continued to be vital to the production of tea and sugar. ) This occurred precisely at the same time that coffee consumption rose vertiginously in most European colonial powers. Coffee was treated differently than sugar and rubber in the nineteenth century Age of Empire because its low technological demands meant that an independent country richly endowed with the factors of production, Brazil, could begin producing on an unprecedented scale. Cheap fertile land and slave labor allowed coffee prices to plummet after 1820 and remain low until the last quarter of the century creating supply-induced demand. Brazil’s exports jumped 75 fold between independence in 1822 and 1899. World consumption grew more than 15 fold in the nineteenth century. Consumers were not very price conscious because they were long buffered from recognizing the price. If they drank in cafes, they were unaware of the type of coffee they were drinking. As the price of one sort rose, cafe owners often blended in cheaper substitute grades rather than raise their price. he same seems to have been true for grocers. Rather than risk losing their clientele, they competed on blends, not on price. They also sought to keep prices constant. Price rises were often not passed on to the consumer. Instead, cheaper blends were used or grocers reduced their profit margin. Moreover, as coffee sipping became customary and even habit-forming, it was transformed into a necessity for many. As a result, coffee in the twentieth century became price and income inelastic. Thus we are presented with the irony that the international coffee market at the turn of the twentieth century, one of the world’s largest commodity markets, was relatively price inelastic (within in a reasonably large range) at both the production and the consumption end, though profit-driven commercial and industrial intermediaries were extremely conscious of price. In other words, it was quite imperfect. The Philippine Coffee Company (PCC) says the first coffee tree was introduced in Lipa, Batangas, in 1740 by a Spanish Franciscan monk and soon spread to neighboring towns of Ibaan, Lemery, San Jose, Taal, and Tanauan. â€Å"Batangas owed much of its wealth to the coffee plantations in these areas and Lipa eventually became the coffee capital of the Philippines. We are one of the few countries that produces the four varieties of commercially viable coffee: Arabica, Liberica (Barako), Excelsa, and Robusta. This is attributed to the country’s climate and soil ranging from the lowlands of southern Luzon to the mountain ranges of the Cordillera and Mindanao. â€Å"In 1880, the Philippines was the fourth largest exporter of coffee beans, and when the coffee rust hit Brazil, Africa, and Java, it became the only source of coffee beans worldwide,† PCC says. Our glory days as one of the world’s coffee centers lasted until 1889 when coffee rust hit the Philippine shores, coupled with an insect infestation. Production plunged to 1/6th its original amount. By then, Brazil had regained its position as the world’s leading producer of coffee. A few of the surviving coffee seedlings were transferred from Batangas to Cavite, where they flourished. Our ranking fell because many of the coffee growing areas – like rice fields and salt beds of Las Pinas – were eaten by housing and commercial developments. Less area was allotted to coffee because farmers had shifted to other cash crops. Today’s Coffee is one of the world’s most popular beverages. People love coffee, so many small business people capitalize on this by opening up coffee shops. Some coffee shops provide Internet access so that people can use their laptops while they enjoy their coffee. This is especially helpful for busy students on the go. The coffee shop trend continues because there is a huge demand for it. If you took a road trip across America, you would find coffee shops on just about every corner. While the biggest and most well-known chain is Starbucks, you will also see many mom-and-pop coffee shops or small coffee shop stands. Even gas stations sell coffee to truckers and other travelers on the road. Brazil has by far the most coffee drinkers worldwide, so you will certainly notice that the coffee shop trends are very popular in Brazil. Some people even say that they can smell the aroma of coffee in the air. Coffee with no sugar or added creamers has no calories, and coffee shops have come up with the trend of offering many coffee drinks and treats that are low-fat. Our generation grew up thinking of coffee as a morning pick-me-up and after dinner drink for adults only. The 18-24 year old group has a different view of coffee, thanks to the coffee shop culture. Where older generations gathered at the local soda shop, these kids made the local coffee shop their afternoon hangout. Starbucks and other local chains improved their coffees with flavors, sugar and many creams. This makes their coffee more appealing to the younger crowd. As those kids graduate from high school and move on to college, they’re finding that their love of coffee moves along with them. MARKETING STRATEGY CTB’s marketing strategy will be focused at getting new customers, retaining the existing customers, getting customers to spend more and come back more often. Given the importance of distribution channels along with the limited resources generally available to small businesses it is particularly important for entrepreneurs to make a careful assessment of their channel alternatives, because an effective channel of distribution strategy is also a major contributing factor for the success of any business entity to be established. Raw materials will be purchased from the suppliers and then delivered to the house of the sole proprietor for storage. The ingredients needed for the production of the final product are made available at the food stall processed into a final product to be served to the customers. The proposed business can offer and acquire sales directly from the market because it has the advantage of having the direct contact with the consumer. †¢ ADVERTISING AND PROMOTIONS We would adopt the following promotion strategies: o Loyalty Cards. o Coffee Feedback Cards o Refills only half the price o Coffee tasting event promotion o Seasonal product promotion o Meal-Focused Promotions o Provide Complementary Services and Products o Print Advertisements in different designated locations o Social Networking (engage fans in twitter, Facebook, Youtube and other photo sharing sites. ) MANAGEMENT PLAN Background and primary responsibilities of the management team In any business, employees have important roles in an organization towards achieving the business’s goal.
